Toyota steps up on safety
Updated Corolla finally adds stability control to entire rangeAfter lagging behind its competition on the safety front for so long Toyota's Corolla will now have electronic stability program (ESP -- or in Toyota's parlance, VSC, for Vehicle Stability Control) and traction control (TRC) standard across the range. The addition of the two life-saving safety features is part of the MY10 facelift for the top-selling small car.
Toyota added ESP and TRC to the Conquest hatch and sedan, Levin ZR hatch and Ultima sedan in January this year but entry-level Ascent hatch joins the party. But it's not just the active safety that gets improved, as front-side airbags are also now standard across the Corolla range.
The full complement of seven airbags remains optional on the Ascent, but standard on the Conquest and Levin models.
Other upgrades include new audio systems, updated interior trim and alloy wheel designs, new steering wheel(s) and changes to the front and rear styling. There are also two new colours available, Tungsten and Tidal Blue.
The MY10 model also means USB/iPod input and Bluetooth is now standard on all models.
The upgrades come as the Corolla faces increased competition from the Mazda3, Hyundai i30, Mitsubishi Lancer and Holden Cruze.
