More powerful Toyota Supra confirmed

Toyota Supra will get more power, but purists wanting a manual gearbox won't be happy

When the new GR Toyota Supra arrives in Australia in September, it will blast to 100km/h in 4.4 seconds, which isn't slow by any stretch of the imagination.

But the Japanese automotive giant has now confirmed that a faster Supra with more herbs than the current model's 250kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbo inline six will follow.

The Toyota GR Supra GT4 race cars hint at the road-legal GRMN Supra

Tetsuya Tada, the godfather of all things cool at Toyota – including a flying car and the development of an all-new GR (GAZOO Racing) high-performance sub-brand – has confirmed what we all guessed.

A super Supra is coming.

Speaking to Autoblog, Toyota's most respected sports car engineer confirmed that more power will come the Toyota Supra's way, probably when it's facelifted in around three years.

How much poke can the BMW-built 3.0-litre turbo six generate?

"With a sports car, the promise is to offer more performance with each additional version," Tada told the US publication.

It's not clear how much extra power the next Supra will get but its BMW engine is highly tuneable and a higher-output version could also slot into an M versions of the Toyota coupe's twin-under-the-skin, the BMW Z4.

The 3.0-litre inline turbo six in the outgoing BMW M3 CS produces up to 338kW/600Nm, but its successor delivers 375kW/600Nm in the upcoming BMW X3 and X4 M -- and perhaps more in the next M3.

Tetsuya has previously explained that several features of the Supra were built-in to enable significant aftermarket tuning – for instance extra bolt holes in the engine bay and a removable panel in the grille to assist the fitment of a larger intercooler.

Get used to that gearshifter...

While an ultra-bonkers Toyota Supra GRMN has not yet been confirmed, this unique track-focussed model is all but certain to lob later in the sports car's life, which will have a span of up to 10 years.

This product rollout would fit in with plans recently revealed by a Toyota Europe exec who spilled the beans on GR versions of every core Toyota model, which includes Corolla and Yaris hot hatches and even the HiLux ute. Toyota's GR performance brand will eventually be punctuated by a range-topping million-dollar hypercar.

Bring on the over-sized intercoolers! Hectic!

In the meantime, expect a handful of special-edition, limited-run Toyota Supra models to bob up, featuring things like sharper suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes and maybe a subtle uptick in power or a yellow steering wheel.

However, all Toyota Supras are expected to retain the current car's eight-speed auto with launch control, which will not appease purists who have been crying out for a six-speed manual transmission since the new Supra was mooted via the Toyota FT-1 concept in 2014.

"Customers who want a manual should choose the Toyota 86," Tada told Autoblog.

That said, there is a mob in Texas that offers a manual conversion for $US12,000 but it remains to be seen if an Aussie company will offer the same conversion.

Only a limited number of Toyota Supra cars are coming to Australia 2019, the first allocation of which completely sold out in 22 seconds.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Supra cost?
Supra GT — $84,900
Supra GTS — $94,900
