Toyota and Panasonic are working together on a cloud-based telematics system that links back to your future smart home appliances.
Advantages the new system offers include the option of setting the home's air conditioning to cool the house down before you arrive – or alternatively, switching it off after you've left.
Toyota is presenting the concept at the Smart Community Japan 2014 exhibition in Tokyo this month. It's not pie in the sky though. Toyota already has plans in place to roll out the idea as a fully-fledged service during the second half of this year.
Development of the technology was not fraught with difficulty, the company claims. An existing cloud-based application, Toyota Smart Center, merely needed to be modified for dialogue with Panasonic's home appliance control application.
For its part, Panasonic is already well advanced in the area of controlling smart home appliances – which can include smart home appliances like television, video equipment and air conditioning. One of the principal development criteria guiding Panasonic's efforts is environmental efficiency. The telematics project, developing in-car control of household appliances commenced a year ago.
