Toyota Australia has commenced exporting the AR Series four-cylinder engine to Thailand and Malaysia, in a deal that adds another 18,000 orders to the 90,000 the facility expects to produce for domestic and export vehicle sales this year.
"Our employees have worked incredibly hard to secure the investment for the new engine plant and ensure that we are producing the best quality engines," said Chris Harrod, Toyota Australia's Executive Director of Manufacturing and Purchasing.
"The fact that we were able to secure new export markets in Thailand and Malaysia is testament to the quality of our work and the positive reputation Toyota Australia has amongst our affiliates.
"It also shows good cooperation and support from the Toyota group within the ASEAN region, which has allowed us to further expand our engagement and linkage to the Toyota global network.
"We are now one of only four countries to produce this particular engine and are the only Australian manufacturer to produce both petrol and hybrid engines."
The 2.5-litre four powers the locally-built Camry, which is also built in Australia – one of eight Camry plants around the world. Toyota Australia will provide both Otto-cycle and Atkinson-cycle (hybrid-drive) versions of the engine to the South-East Asian markets.
Of the 108,000 engines Toyota anticipates the new plant will build this year, the mix is expected to be 85 per cent petrol and 15 per cent hybrid. While the latest Camry and Camry Hybrid have been on sale for around 12 months, the engines fitted have been imported up to this point, with the local production facility only entering into full production from last week. Governments in Thailand and Australia worked out a free trade agreement some years ago, but the FTA has tended to favour automotive manufacturers in Thailand rather than Australia. Supplying engines overseas – a first for Toyota in Australia – is a rare instance of manufactured goods sailing in the other direction. The inaugural shipment is due to dock next month.
For many years the Altona vehicle assembly plant has been exporting Camrys to other parts of the world, but this is the first occasion engines alone have been exported by Toyota Australia.
