Toyota has revealed a one-off Baja-themed version of the FJ Cruiser off-roader ahead of its public unveiling at the 2012 SEMA Show tomorrow (October 30).
Dubbed the FJ-S Cruiser, the off-road concept’s 4.0-litre petrol V6 is fitted with a TRD supercharger featuring Twin Vortices System (TVS), a high-efficiency four-lobe rotor pack and a large air-to-water intercooler.
Like the similar engine seen in Toyota Australia’s discontinued TRD HiLux, the blown V6 increases the standard FJ Cruiser engine’s maximum power output by 30 per cent, from 200 to 257kW, and its peak torque by 25 per cent, from 380 to 460Nm – both at 3500rpm. Inspired by Toyota’s Baja Series Tacoma, the SEMA show truck is fitted with an underbody ‘exoskeleton’ that Toyota says “creates a more suitable platform for the suspension modifications and wheel/tyre upgrades”.
The latter include front 60mm Bilstein race shocks with 1.3-inch lift and 50mm Bilstein race shocks with remote reservoirs, plus 17-inch TRD Midnight Black beadlock-style wheels and BFGoodrich All-Terrain tyres. Extra exterior features include a front nudge bar and rock rails, while the interior gets two-tone leather seat trim with FJ-S logos and custom floor mats.
Toyota said it built the FJ Cruiser tough-truck in response to sustained demand from off-road aficionados for new variations of the popular Prado-based off-road wagon, which is available in Australia in a single 4.0-litre V6 auto specification grade here, priced at $46,490 plus ORCs.
Unlike our FJ Cruiser, which is available only with a five-speed automatic transmission and returns average fuel consumption of 11.4L/100km, the SEMA concept is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission.
“TRD's work on high-performance off-road variants of Toyota vehicles goes back a number of years,” said Toyota Motor Sales National Manager of Engagement Marketing and Motorsports, Keith Dahl. “The FJ-S is a great example of their off-road expertise.”
