Toyota and Lexus UK have both announced they are introducing a new warranty that provides 10 years' cover for all new and used cars, vans and pick-ups.
The no-cost Relax scheme is claimed to add a year's warranty to a vehicle every time it is serviced at a Toyota or Lexus dealer, with eligible vehicles covering all models produced by the Japanese car-maker that are less than 10 years old and have covered less than 160,000km.
Perhaps more surprising, the Relax warranty is retrospective and automatically applies to any Toyota and Lexus already on the market that is less than 10 years old and has covered less than 160,000km.
This means if a British customer purchases a nine-year-old Toyota Prius with 140,000km on the clock and has it serviced at their local Toyota dealer, the car-maker throws in a year's free manufacturer-backed warranty.
Even cars that have spent the majority of their life being serviced at an independent dealer are covered, says Toyota, so long as they return to its dealer network on the next check-up.
For commercial vehicles with longer service intervals, Toyota says if your van or ute only needs a service every two years it will offer two years' worth of warranty after every dealer visit.
Up until now, Toyota had offered a five-year/160,000km on all its vehicles, while premium brand Lexus provided just three-year/120,000km cover.
Toyota hopes the new Relax warranty will incentivise owners to keep within its franchised dealer network and improve residual values of all its used vehicles.
In Europe, Toyota is among the car-makers with the lowest warranty costs.
It's thought the scheme is already being investigated by rival brands.
In Australia, Toyota offers five-year/unlimited-kilometre cover, while Lexus owners only have a four-year/100,000km warranty.
Back in December 2020 fellow Japanese brand Mitsubishi shocked the Australian car industry by rolling out a 10-year/200,000km warranty, but the lengthy cover is not retrospective and only applies to new vehicles.
