The 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport has been confirmed for the Australian market just weeks after its global debut, with the sports-themed light SUV to be offered here exclusively with a hybrid powertrain.
This is the 85kW 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol-electric powertrain already in service in the Toyota Yaris Cross, driving the front wheels only via a continuously variable automatic transmission.
However, Toyota says the electric motor has been optimised for improved responsiveness as part of a comprehensive set of mechanical, aesthetic and cabin upgrades that complement its Gazoo Racing (GR) connections.
Under the pumped-up skin is a revised (read firmer) suspension tune, along with retuned steering and extra undercarriage bracing to help stiffen up the body.
Other highlights of the Yaris Cross GR Sport include black 18-inch alloy wheels (with Falken FK510 tyres), unique grille mesh, a more aggressive rear diffuser and red brake callipers.
Inside, there’s sports seats upholstered in ‘suede-like’ material and leather, silver trim inserts, sports pedals, red stitching and a smattering of GR logos.
Toyota has also confirmed standard features will include a 7.0-inch infotainment touch-screen, smartphone mirroring, climate control and the latest iteration of Toyota Connected Services.
Local pricing will not be released until closer to the latest GR Sport model’s local launch in December, although we expect it to be similar to the top-spec Urban 2WD hybrid model that currently starts at $34,990 plus ORCs.
The Yaris Cross will be the third GR Sport model offered Down Under behind the bigger Toyota C-HR and go-anywhere Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.
It will be joined next year by the Toyota HiLux GR Sport.
