Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport revealed

Toyota’s smallest SUV joins the Gazoo Racing ‘lite’ range with sporty chassis, cabin and exterior mods

Toyota has expanded its sports-themed GR Sport portfolio with the unveiling of the 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport ahead of its Japanese market introduction next month.

As per other GR Sport models including the one-size-larger Toyota C-HR GR Sport, the Yaris Cross version has been treated to sporty cosmetic, cabin and chassis upgrades to enhance its sense of attitude and the driving experience.

The cosmetic touches include a unique black grille mesh, rear diffuser and fog light bezels, black 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in sporty Falken FK510 rubber, red brake callipers and the obligatory ‘GR SPORT’ badging.

Cabin highlights extend to GR-branded sports seats upholstered in ‘Air Nubuck’ and synthetic leather, a GR leather-wrapped steering wheel, sports pedals, GR key fob and darkened metallic-look trim.

Under the sporty skin you’ll find some extra undercarriage bracing to help stiffen up the body, lowered springs and a bespoke tune for the suspension bushes, shock absorbers and electric power steering system.

Toyota says the changes not only back up the more aggressive look, but also “realises light driving and manoeuvrability with a sense of unity with the car”.

The hybrid version takes things a step further with a stiffened drive shaft and, Toyota says, “optimised” electric motor for improved throttle response.

Only confirmed for the Japanese market at this stage, Toyota Australia has told carsales it’s “continually studying the market for new opportunities to offer exciting new products to Australian customers”.

The emergence of the Yaris Cross GR Sport elevates the Japanese GR Sport portfolio’s model count to six, joining the Toyota HiLux GR Sport, Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport, Toyota Copen GR Sport, Toyota C-HR GR Sport and Toyota Prius PHV GR Sport.

A Toyota Fortuner GR Sport is also offered in Thailand, while for the time being the Aussie ‘GR lite’ stable only includes the C-HR and LandCruiser.
