Toyota's tiny iQ will come to market with a rear-seat airbag curtain which deploys around the headrests.
The iQ (more here), has almost no rear overhang -- and therefore, no rear crumple zone to speak of -- so Toyota has developed the rear window curtain airbag to provide some head protection for rear-seat occupants in the event of a straightforward rear-end collision.
As with side-curtain airbags, the rear-window type deploys from the headlining and Toyota claims that it will double the head protection afforded the rear-seat passengers by the headrests.
The new safety feature contributes to the company's initiative to develop safer vehicles and technologies, the first leg of a three-point strategy to reduce road trauma. Toyota also aims to reduce the road toll by being an active participant in the development of safer traffic environments and by educating road users to exercise more care on the roads.
