Trailer for new sitcom about the inner workings of an American car company released

The sitcom American Auto takes a comedic look at life working for a struggling car brand from the corporate office to the factory floor.

In early 2021, American TV network NBC announced that they were releasing a new sitcom by the end of the year called American Auto, that follows the lives of several high-ranking executives at a struggling Detroit car company.

This week they have released the first teaser trailer for the series which frames itself as a workplace comedy, think The Office, 30Rock and Superstore, the latter being the creators of the new series.

Set in Detroit, the corporate executives of Payne Motors are at a crossroads, adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard. The premise sounds strangely familiar to the documented trials and tribulations of General Motors in the years following its 2009 bankruptcy...

Shaking things up is the new CEO, Katherine Hastings (played by Ana Gasteyer), whose leadership, experience and savvy is only slightly offset by her complete lack of knowledge about cars. Luckily, her team has some of the best minds in the business, when they aren't fighting or trying to outwit each other.

The teaser trailer shows Gasteyer sitting around a boardroom table with her colleagues as they try to decide on an appropriate name for Payne Motors’ latest vehicle. They then poke fun at other car brands who called their cars names that didn’t quite translate well to other languages. This is a real example of what has happened with cars such as the Mitsubishi Pajero.

In addition to Gasteyer, the show’s cast also features Aussie actress Harriet Dyer (Love Child), Jon Barinholtz (Superstore), Humphrey Ker, Michael B. Washington and Tye White. The series is set to air on US network NBC and streaming service Peacock from December 13th. No word on whether it will be available in Australia just yet.
