TRD breaks cover in open-wheeler stunt

Toyota has 'leaked' shots of the production TRD Aurion.

Look closely at the photos hereabouts and what do you see? No, not rally stalwart Neal Bates or burly reigning ARC champ, Simon Evans… Look closer!

In the background of the shot, which features one of the open-wheel racing cars campaigned in New Zealand's Toyota Racing Series (TRS) is Toyota's first tilt at the sedan performance big league -- at least Down Under. A prop in the Oran Park photoshoot, the black car is in fact the first official glimpse of the complete production TRD Aurion.

Toyota sources were playing down the appearance of the car in the photo on Friday, saying that the car had already appeared at motor shows. In part they're right, however, the car in question is not only undisguised, it is complete inside and out.

Differences from the show car include a neater, smaller rear spoiler and revised brightwork. Indeed, rather than the 'in your face' blackout treatment of the Melbourne show display Aurion, the car shown here features more subtle chromework. The overall effect is on a par with, say, the S-Line range of accoutrement's Audi offers on some of its models.

The spoiler change and 'exec' style of the car is also an indicator that Toyota will likely offer more than one trim grade in the TRD-fettled model.

The TRD Aurion and the Toyota Racing Series open-wheeler -- which both Bates and Evans tested -- are scheduled to appear on Channel Ten's RPM Motorsport Show this weekend. We'll be tuning in for more clues…
