BMW’s 1 Series M is a pretty tasty device in standard form, but German tweaker Tuningwerk has found a way to make the stubby coupe an even more delicious proposition.
Dubbed the 1M RS and pictured alongside festooned in Safety Car livery, what you’re looking at is 388kW and 614Nm of madness, all of which retails in Germany for 119,000 euros, which is roughly on par with what a Porsche 911 Turbo costs in that market.
The press release doesn’t reveal how these huge outputs were yielded from the donor 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-pot (which makes do with 250kW and 450Nm in the standard 1 Series M), but the blurb does allude to a top whack of 300km/h, which puts the baby Bimmer in some fairly elite company.
What’s more, the 614Nm of twist is allegedly on tap from just 2800rpm, so the 1M RS seems to have the credentials to be a bona-fide tyre fryer.
Billed as the perfect amalgamation of a road and track car, the Tuningwerk creation rides on huge ATS superlight 9x19-inch wheels at the front and 10x19-inchers at the back, with said rims enveloped in 245/35R19 Dunlop Sport Maxx rubber up front and massive 285/30R19 gumballs at the back.
Housed within the oversize hoops is a big set of anchors comprising 370mm steel discs as standard or 380mm carbon ceramic stoppers available as an option. Other performance-related mods include a shortened 3.25 rear-axle ratio, and the differential is of the locking variety (based on what we could glean from the Germlish press release).
Given the massive grunt of the engine, the 1M RS is equipped with an upgraded cooling system that includes a second oil cooler. Spent gases are also more efficiently expelled by what’s billed as a “titanic exhaust system”.
The standard clutch is said to be “well suited for the city traffic”, but a racing clutch will also be available to enable the 1M RS to compete in FIA-sanctioned events.
There’s a raft of bespoke body addenda to boost aero efficiency and reduce weight, and these include a carbonfibre GT4 front lip, bonnet, boot lid and rear spoiler. The Recaro pews are also fabricated from carbonfibre.
Further weight savings are possible through optional carbonfibre doors and plastic side glass, and the standard door trims and insulation material can also be ditched if competitive action is on the menu.
All in all, sounds like a barrel of laughs. Pity we’ll never see it here…
