Turbodiesel Caliber arrives, Avenger on the way

The 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine has finally arrived to join the Dodge Caliber range. The turbodiesel, rated at 103kW/310Nm, is available for the Caliber ST, SX and SXT models.

Dodge says the turbodiesel is among the best in class for performance and efficiency. The new engines delivers 6.0lt/100km and is compliant with Euro IV emissions standards. It is offered with a six-speed manual only.

The addition of the turbodiesel option to Caliber's range, which includes 1.8-litre, 2.0-litre and 2.4-litre petrol engines, is expected to "alleviate supply constraints that have prevented larger sales volumes to date".

"We're selling all of the Calibers that we can get our hands on," said Gerry Jenkins, managing director, Chrysler Group Australia. "When supply frees up we will sell even more."

Caliber comes standard with dual front and side-curtain air bags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, keyless entry, engine immobiliser, security alarm, central locking, air-conditioning, CD stereo, tilt steering wheel, power windows, power folding heated exterior mirrors and fold-flat split rear seats. Electronic Stability Program (ESP), traction control and brake assist systems are also standard.

Prices for the turbodiesel Caliber start at $28,990 for the ST model.

Unveiled in production trim at the Detroit motor show last week, the Dodge Avenger (also pictured) has also been confirmed for Australian showrooms during the third-quarter of 2007.

The mid-sized sedan will likely be offered with a range of engine options including a 2.4-litre four cylinder, 2.7-litre V6 and 2.0-litre turbodiesel.

Dodge says specifications will be announced closer to launch, but we can expect a plethora of standard features such as the 'ChillZone' ex Caliber and a voice-activated navigation audio system.

The Avenger will join Caliber and the upcoming Nitro SUV, which is expected mid-year.
