Victorian motorists are being encouraged to drive with their headlights on low beam on Thursday December 10, to show their commitment to reducing road trauma.
The idea behind the campaign is to "Shine a Light on Road Trauma". By turning on low beam car lights during the day, Victorian motorists can show their support and commitment to reducing the road toll, while remembering those who have died on the road. Since the first Transport Accident Commission's (TAC) television advert was aired, more than 8000 people have died on Victorian roads.
"We need the community's help to reduce these devastating numbers," said Victorian Premier John Brumby.
"Drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians can all play a part in being responsible when on the roads. I call on all Victorians to turn on their headlights on Thursday 10 December to show your commitment to reducing road trauma," added Brumby.
The Arrive Alive strategy aims to reduce the road toll 30 per cent by 2017 and Mr Brumby reasserted his commitment to this goal: "Victoria Police are dedicating more resources than ever before to fight the road toll.
"The Government is supporting police with new measures to help enforce the road rules and enhanced campaigns to remind motorists of the dangers on the roads," said Brumby.
