Two Aussie motorsport icons up for sale

Two historic automotive classics to appear in November auction

Mossgreen's November automotive auction in Melbourne is shaping up to be a very exciting day, with a myriad of fantastic, gorgeous and rare cars that span the last century.

Among the lots are two very rare Australian made cars, a 1928 Chamberlain 8 and a 1950s Molina Monza. Both of these cars come from a private collection and both were featured in the National Gallery of Victoria's fantastic art instalment "Shifting Gears – Design innovation and the Australian car in 2015".

The Chamberlain 8 was created by revered engineer, Alan Hawker "Bob" Chamberlain, and his brother Bill. Unusual for its era, the car featured a space-frame chassis with front-wheel drive and independent suspension. The car was developed over a seven year period from its initial inception and construction in 1928, through to 1935. Bill Chamberlain built the engine, a 1.0-litre two-stroke with four cylinders, eight pistons, two crankshafts and a Roots-type blower. It was famous in its time for the supercharger's explosive whine. Mossgreen estimates a price range of $280,000 – $380,000.

The Molina Monza was built and raced by Melbourne restaurant identity, Lou Molina.
Powered by a front-mounted Holden 2.1-litre grey motor – an inline six – with a Roots-type supercharger and Repco high-power head, the Monza is a rear-wheel drive car with four-speed manual transmission. The Monza appeared in the race scene of the 1959 film 'On the Beach', which was based on Nevil Shute's post-apocalyptic novel.

Other notable cars at the auction include a 2007 Dodge Viper FIA homologated GT3 race car, a low-mileage Jaguar XK120 drop head coupe, a 1938 Lancia Astura Pininfarina cabriolet and a 1991 Lancia Delta Intergrale Evoluzione.

The cars can be viewed from Thursday the 24th through to Saturday the 26th of November, between the hours of 10am – 5pm. The Auction will take place on Sunday the 27th of November.
