Having just completed a rare sales campaign that saw Japan's most colourful backyard builder Mitsuoka Motors sell its one-off 'Orochi Evangelion 7-Eleven Ltd' coupe through the country's 7-Eleven chain of nationwide stores, the eclectic carmaker is back in the news with another limited offer.
This time, it's the Viewt Twilight, a special limited version of the company's biggest selling model, the Viewt. Boasting a unique paintjob and a bespoke Harris Tweed interior, the Twilight will be available to just 15 customers.
The Viewt was first launched in 1993 and has sold over 10,000 units. Wanting to inject some pizzazz into this aging minicar – the funky four-seater Twilight which employs a Nissan Micra platform and powertrain but was modelled on a Jaguar MkII – Mitsuoka chose a rare combination of Scotland's famous Harris Tweed and tan-coloured seats and woodgrain dash to create an interior that perfectly matches its copper gold exterior paintjob.
For over a century, Harris Tweed is a cloth that has been handwoven by islanders at their homes in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and made from pure virgin wool, dyed and spun in the Outer Hebrides. Given its long history and prestige, a brand that is more often found in clothes from Paul Smith and Brookes Brothers, Harris Tweed is not an easy apparel to gain permission to use. Mitsuoka had to go through a tedious process of evaluation before the famous house agreed to allow the Japanese backyard builder to use their cloth.
A Jaguar MkII mini-me with Harris Tweed? Only in Japan could you merge two British icons and drop them onto a Japanese minicar platform, and get away with it. The front-wheel drive Viewt Twilight is powered by a 1.2 litre Nissan engine with CVT and has just gone on sale in Japan for 2.79m yen (A$27,900). If you want one of these Twilights, get in early and I'll reserve one for you.
