Growing collectors' interest in Volkswagen's classic commercial vehicles has led to two more classic Volkswagen Type 2 Kombis being auctioned off at the Shannons Melbourne Spring Auction.
Historically known as the typical vehicle-of-choice for hippies and surfers who were after cheap and practical transport, the instantly-recognisable Kombi van has reached cult status around the world, with 'split window' models such as the Samba variant becoming sought after collectors items.
One of the vehicles expected to generate International interest at the September 21 auction is a 1966 '21 Window' Samba wagon that was delivered new in Boston, Massachusetts with six opening side windows.
This Kombi was purchased out of Japan in February 2008 and was initially used as a display vehicle in surf shops across Australia from Sorrento to Noosa.
After some time off the road, the owner decided to put the Kombi back on the road, having the classic bus refurbished by renowned Kombi specialists The Kombi Shop in Noosa Heads in its original Pearl White on Velvet Green.
Back in February, we reported that a rare 1960 model Kombi Samba bus fetched a staggering $202,000 at the 2015 Shannons Late Summer Auction, which set a new auction record in Australia and possibly the world.
The Kombi up for auction this month, due to its collectability as a ’21 window’ model, its attraction as a promotional vehicle and the fact that it has been refurbished and restored to be used on the road is expected to sell for a relatively conservative $65,000-$75,000.
Also going under the gavel is a mechanically and cosmetically upgraded 1970 VW T2 Microbus.
This particular right-hand drive Kombi was locally assembled at Volkswagen’s former Clayton plant in Melbourne, and was professionally restored by The Bus Shop in its current red and white paint scheme.
Incidentally, this particular Kombi was used as a prize by Coca-Cola for a Crown Casino barrel draw.
Fitted with a rebuilt 1600cc engine, the T2 Kombi also features twin Dellorto carburettors and Bosch electric ignition, making for a strong and reliable road performer and very usable classic.
Other notable features include chrome bumpers and Empi five-spoke mag wheels, while the interior has been finished with matching red/white upholstery and red carpet throughout, as well as tinted glass all round and jail bars fitted to the rear window.
Due to its status as a collectible vehicle and daily usability, the T2 Kombi has a quoted guiding range of $26,000-$32,000.
