Two-tier line-up planned for 2026 MG4

All-new front-drive base models, updated rear-drive mid-rangers and flagship

The second-generation MG4 will be sold alongside its predecessor next year in a new two-tier electric small car line-up.

According to MG Motor Australia, the 2026 MG4 will arrive here in the second quarter of next year as a replacement for the familiar and entry-level Excite 51kWh, with customers set to have the option of either a 43kWh or 54kWh battery.

The new model has very little in common with the current version beyond its approximate size and nameplate, and will even cater to a different audience: budget-minded city buyers vs more general users with a need for more range.

“The new for 2026 front wheel drive will be a completely different vehicle, perfect for the city,” MG Australia CEO Peter Ciao said.

“Balancing driver usage needs and production cost considerations of rear-wheel drive, we saw the opportunity for an affordable FWD vehicle to complement the MG4 RWD and AWD”.

An important note here is that the familiar model isn’t being replaced entirely; the 64kWh variants will be retained and updated with new/enhanced features to help keep them competitive in the rapidly evolving EV landscape.

Finer details of the new line-up will be announced closer to the 2026 MG4’s release, but it seems the 77kWh ‘Long Range’ might be shown the door since it was only referenced once in the media assets provided for this report, and not in the context of 2026.
