TYRES: A Michelin fit for supercars
Ultra-high performance tyre specified for 911 GT3 and SLS Black Series now available in AustraliaMichelin's Pilot Sport Cup 2 is now being sold through the tyre brand's local retailers.
The tyre, which has been fitted as original equipment to the (997 series) Porsche 911 GT3, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series and the Ferrari 458 Speciale, ranges in size from 235/40 R19 up to 325/30 R21. It's not cheap as an after-market fitting however; prices run from $629 to $1049.
What you get for your money is a tyre that was the point of contact between the road and the wheels of the Porsche 918 Spyder that set a new lap record at the Nurburgring's Nordschleife. And the Renault Megane RS Trophy R that set its own lap record for front-wheel drive cars around the same course was also fitted with the Michelins.
While the tyre is 'road legal', Michelin has designed the Sport Cup 2 to withstand the punishment of track competition 50 per cent longer than its predecessor, the Pilot Sport Cup+, the company claims. New technology in the tyre's construction comprises bi-compound materials (an 'endurance racing compound' in the outer tread, a rigid elastomer in the inner tread). Aramid under the tread helps the tyre maintain a consistent contact patch at very high speeds.
Around the Jerez race track in Spain, the new tyre was 1.8 seconds faster over five laps in the dry, and around the Ladoux track in France the difference between old and new tyres was 1.2 seconds over five laps in the wet.
