Tyre manufacturer Goodyear is claiming its new EfficientGrip SUV tyre range is a "breakthrough" for SUV owners.
In a recent press release Goodyear claims that the new tyre, fitted as original equipment to the Audi Q3 and Range Rover Evoque sold in European markets, offers quieter running, lower rolling resistance and shorter braking distances – when measured against the tyre it replaces, the Wrangler HP AW.
“People who own SUVs are mostly driven by the need to feel 'in control' and safe,” Goodyear spokesperson, Blake Vincent said. “Many SUV owners today, who mainly drive in urban settings, know what it takes to truly enjoy their vehicle – they want the driving comfort of a sedan in an SUV.”
“Now, SUV drivers can discover an exceptionally quiet and comfortable drive like never before with the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV. The EfficientGrip SUV tyres are proof of Goodyear’s continued commitment to increase the value of our brand and products with market-back innovation, delivering on the core needs of drivers of SUVs.”
Goodyear has developed EfficientGrip SUV to remain quieter than its predecessor through careful tread design and "a shock-absorbing carcass" complete with "a high-loaded silica blend compound" to reduce friction between molecules, and thus lower fuel use. The elements of the tread design aimed at dampening noise include closed shoulders to quell radiating sound waves, block pitches increased from 68 to 72 to reduce harmonics, and a rib-type design to smooth the impact between the contact patch and the road surface. Goodyear has named this assortment of ideas 'QuietTred Technology'.
More than conventional passenger-car tyres, tyres for SUVs are required to achieve a high standard of performance across a range of conflicting criteria. Since SUVs go off-road, the tyres must deliver higher levels of grip on low-friction surfaces, but without being unduly noisy on sealed roads. And the grip required off-road often means handling and road-holding that's less car-like on the road.
Goodyear estimates that the EfficientGrip SUV tyre will bring a vehicle to a halt on wet roads over a distance seven per cent shorter than the previous Wrangler tyres could manage in the same testing. The company has achieved this by specifying a "high number of biting edges with equally high blade density" and an "optimised contact patch" with "matched pressure distribution in key areas of the footprint".
The new tyre range is available in sizes from 15 to 20-inch diameter and, with 29 common sizes on offer, Goodyear expects to meet the needs of most SUV owners looking to replace Wrangler tyres, or direct rivals, the Bridgestone Dueler D683 and Micheline Latitude Tour HP.
