TYRES: Kumho continues carbon-offset initiative

Each Kumho Ecowing tyre purchased will result in the planting of a native tree
Korean tyre-maker Kumho will continue its cooperative arrangement with carbon offset organisation Greenfleet in which a tit-for-tat deal sees one native tree planted for every Ecowing Kumho tyre sold in the country.
The arrangement, which has been in place since March 2012, has so far been responsible for the planting of 12,500 trees in Australian native forests, adding to the Greenfleet programme that has planted more than 8.5 million native trees around the country since 1997.
Mr Harry Cho, who is managing director of Kumho Tyre Australia, said: "We are very excited to continue our partnership with Greenfleet, because it gives consumers the power to help the environment at the point of sale."
Trees are a vital weapon in combatting greenhouse gases because of their ability to absorb carbon. They also provide wildlife habitats, improve soil and water quality and increase the Australian landscape's resilience to the effects of climate change.
According to Greenfleet CEO Wayne Westcott, the arrangement with Kumho is an effective way of not just raising public awareness of climate change, but also in demonstrating something of what the person in the street can do to help.
"Greenfleet's mission is to protect our climate by restoring native forests. We are confident our partnership with Kumho will increase consumer awareness of climate change and show people how easy choices made by people can make a collective difference. It's not just about offsetting – it's also about what you buy and how you use it every day," he said.
"This promotion reinforces the old adage that every little bit counts and buying low resistance tyres not only reduces average fuel consumption, it can also plant trees." Mr Westcott added.
Kumho's Ecowing tyres offer low rolling resistance and, rather than the commonly-used petroleum based products, are made with an environmentally friendly compound.
