UK drivers caught at 'outrageous speeds' despite lockdown

Quiet roads fuelling extreme speeds, say British cops who caught one driver doing 216km/h in a 60km/h zone

Low fuel prices and quiet roads are fuelling reckless driving in the UK, with British police reporting drivers flouting not only COVID-19 enforced lockdowns but speed limits too.

The worst offender, caught by London's Metropolitan Police, was a driver who was clocked at an incredible 134mph (216km/h) in a 40mph (64km/h) zone.

Another was caught after passing a police car at 130mph (209km/h) on the M25, where the speed limit is set at 70mph (113km/h).

According to Surrey Police, the hapless motorist reportedly said: "I thought the faster I went, the less chance I could catch coronavirus."

A further two drivers were stopped after being filmed 'racing' one another at speeds of almost 80mph (128km/h) in a 40mph (64km/h) zone.

Another driver was caught exceeding 142mph (229km/h).

It's not just a small handful of drivers.

With fewer drivers on London roads, average speeds have reportedly crept up from 20mph (32km/h) to 37mph (59km/h).

It's a problem afflicting most of the country. In northern England, Manchester's city police have reported that around 40 per cent of all drivers are now breaking speed limits.
