Unique Brock Commodore up for auction

HDT VK Commodore the only car shared by Bathurst legends at Bathurst

The 1986 Holden Dealer Team 05 Commodore driven by Aussie racing legends Peter Brock and Allan Moffat is officially up for sale.

Currently residing at the National Motor Racing Museum at Mount Panorama, Bathurst, the historic race car is said to be the only one shared by Brock and Moffat at The Mountain.

It’s also the car that Moffat famously crashed during practice in 1986 ahead of The Great Race, leading to an overnight repair job by the team to get it back on track the following day.

Chassis HDT 14 was also raced by Brock in the 1987 Australian Touring Car Championship, but was later converted to VL specification and then used by TV commentator/race car driver Neil Crompton for his touring car debut later that year.

It has since been restored back to VK specification by a Melbourne-based company and is cloaked in the same livery it raced at Bathurst with in 1986.

Powered by a 4.9-litre V8, the car also holds the title for the last factory-backed Holden to win under the HDT banner, at the 1987 Wellington 500 in New Zealand, with Brock and Moffat behind the wheel.

The car’s transmission tunnel features signatures from both drivers, while its CAMS log books will be included in the sale. It’s also being advertised with a ‘fresh engine’, built by ex-HDT crew member Neill ‘Part’ Burns.

“Brock’s HDT built six Group A Holden Commodore VK race cars for their own use in Mobil colours and this car has far and away the best history of any of the five that remain in Australia,” says Aaron Noonan from V8 Sleuth, the company marketing the car.

“Cars like these don’t come up onto the market very often and there will be a very large number of collectors keen to add this famous car to their collection.”

It’s not the first time a Holden Commodore piloted by Peter Brock has gone up for auction, but this one may prove even more popular among Australian and overseas collectors following this week’s news of Holden’s demise.
