Upcoming BMW i7 shown undergoing sound testing

Bavarian brand pulls all stops to ensure perfect cabin ambience for its answer to Mercedes-Benz EQS electric limo

The upcoming 2022 BMW i7 electric limousine has been teased once again, this time undergoing acoustic testing at the brand’s new Research and Innovation Centre in Munich.

Within the new facility, engineers are trying to finetune the i7’s sound proofing as well as its so-called ‘BMW IconicSounds Electric’ tones in an attempt to create the ultimate luxury EV ambience.

“The BMW i7 aspires to redefine the high standards of the luxury segment – and this very much applies to acoustic comfort as well,” said BMW.

“Great importance was attached to noiseless power delivery of the electric motor.

“Contributing factors here include acoustic optimisation of the electric drive units, a model-specific mount concept and a newly developed noise encapsulation for the electric motors.”

BMW is predictably throwing the kitchen sink at the i7 in terms of sound-deadening materials, but it’s also developing a high-end noise-cancellation system to help counteract any “irritating noises registered by development engineers during test drives on the road”.

To this end, engineers have developed an adjustable rolling road with interchangeable surface coverings to recreate any of these undesirable tones and then find a counteracting frequency to nullify them.

These synthesised, inaudible frequencies and the advanced sound deadening need to work in all major climate conditions, which is why the new facility features an advanced climate control system designed to replicate both temperature extremes.

“With their detailed analyses and precise optimisation, the development and test engineers seek to ensure that the new luxury sedans offer the best comfort experience ever realised in a BMW,” the spokesperson said.
