The 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS has unveiled, bringing a new-generation 800V architecture, new e-motors, up to 925km of claimed driving range and a host of advanced tech including steer-by-wire and an AI-powered operating system.

Much more than just a typical mid-life facelift, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz EQS has received a major overhaul, with the German marque saying more than a quarter of its components are either newly developed or significantly revised.
At its core is a new 800-volt electrical platform that enables ultra-fast charging at up to 350kW – something Merc claims will allow up to 320km of driving range to be added in around 10 minutes.
It’s also good for up to 925km of claimed driving range (WLTP), besting the inbound BMW i3’s 900km claim to set a new benchmark Down Under.

The gains come primarily from newly-developed electric drive units, a two-speed transmission on the rear axle and revised battery chemistry. The battery capacity has also been enlarged to 122kWh in some variants thanks to improved energy density, while others have reduced cobalt content – according to Benz.
Equipped with bi-directional charging, the EQS also introduces steer-by-wire technology, removing the physical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels, with the promise of improved manoeuvrability, reduced vibrations and a more flexible cabin layout.
Inside, the EQS continues with its MBUX Hyperscreen – a 55-inch glass surface integrating three displays – paired with the latest Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS) to make it the ‘most intelligent EQS ever’.

Mercedes says the AI-powered platform, capable of over-the-air (OTA) updates, brings deeper personalisation and a more conversational virtual assistant capable of complex interactions.
The EQS will also come equipped with an extensive suite of driver assistance systems, while parking functions are said to have been enhanced and now capable of faster automated manoeuvres and diagonal parking.
Comfort and luxury remain key ingredients of the EQS, with heated seatbelts added for a unique touch, along with advanced air filtration with a HEPA system, and upgraded rear-seat entertainment with twin 13.1-inch displays.
Mercedes-Benz is yet to detail the local line-up, however customer deliveries are due to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.
And, while the updated EQS showcases Mercedes-Benz’s latest advancements in electric luxury, its arrival comes against a challenging backdrop for the brand’s EVs locally.
In late 2025, Mercedes-Benz Australia significantly discounted its EQE and EQS models, with some variants slashed by a whopping $100,000 in a bid to clear stock amid slower-than-expected demand for high-end electric models.
That said, the heavily updated EQS could play a key role in reinvigorating interest in the brand’s flagship EV – particularly amid surging demand for EVs spurred by the current fuel crisis – thanks to its significantly improved range, faster charging capability and next-generation technology.
