The upgraded 2026 Toyota GR Corolla has been unwrapped ahead of its launch in Australia early next year, with the updated hot hatch said to have benefited from its participation in Japanese motorsport. Headline upgrades include the introduction of a reinforced stiffer structure for improved high-speed cornering, added cool air duct for enhanced performance and a new sound system that ramps up the excitement by pumping in fake engine noise.
Motorsport improves the breed, as they say, and the new 2026 Toyota GR Corolla has now gained performance tweaks inspired by competition in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series, where engineers soon realised it needed greater rigidity to sustain the high vertical and lateral g-forces subjected to it on track.
All MY26 GR Corollas will now come with 32.7 metres of structural adhesive – compared to the 13.9 metres used before – with most of the additional body glue used around the front part of the body floor and around the wheel wells.
Toyota says the extra stiffness allows drivers "to achieve stable driving performance even on overseas circuits, which typically generate more-intense vertical and lateral G-forces than circuits in Japan."
Behind the wheel, the stiffer structure is said to provide a greater "sense of driver-car unity in all situations, from city to circuit driving."
Enabling the driver to sustain full throttle without a drop off in power, the updated hot hatch now includes a new high-speed cool air duct that has been added to draw air from the front grille to reduce the intake air temperature.
As part of the upgrade, the GR Corolla is now available with a new active sound control that emits a sporty engine note through the vehicle's speakers to correspond with either the driver accelerating or decelerating.
The JBL premium sound system will come standard, with Toyota set to offer three active sound control settings, plus an 'off' mode for purists.
The same sound system also bags a subwoofer in the boot, upping the speaker count to nine. The same stereo is capable of active noise cancellation for higher levels of refinement.
In Japan, Toyota will also offer a new package of software upgrades to existing owners.
On MY23-spec GR Corollas this sees torque boosted by 30Nm from 370Nm to 400Nm.
As part of the upgrades, the GR-FOUR all-wheel drive will also be overhauled, with the Gravel mode offering a 50:50 front-rear torque bias, while the Track mode now allows drivers to vary the split from 60:40 front/rear to 30:70.
Even though some might lament the lack of power and torque gains, those who occasionally plan to use their car on track will rejoice at the enhanced stiffness and cooling the MY26 GR Corolla comes with.
And, while some might be less convinced by the extra fake piped-in noise, the continued evolution of what remains one of the most impressive hot hatches in the business must be welcomed.
