Updated Range Rover Velar gets more tech

Stylish Rangie gets cabin air filtration system, updated software, special bespoke paint option and more

Land Rover has refreshed its Range Rover Velar, adding new technology and a special 'match to sample' paint finish previously offered by the British car-maker's bespoke division.

On sale in Europe, the 2021 Range Rover Velar now comes with Land Rover's latest Cabin Air Purification tech that is claimed to be a significant upgrade on the previous Cabin Air Ionisation system.

According to Land Rover, the new air purifier tech can now filter out particles down to 2.5 microns from the interior while monitoring CO2 levels within. If the system thinks the levels are too high, the vehicle automatically ventilates the cabin.

Land Rover says the new system is capable of reducing drowsiness and fatigue and boosts general occupant wellbeing.

As well as working on the move, the new climate control system also has a pre-conditioning function that is capable of removing any impurities from the cabin before you set off on your journey. The pre-conditioning feature can be activated using a smartphone app or the car's infotainment system.

Other technology introduced to enhance the appeal of the Velar includes over-the-air updates, starting with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto due before the end of the year.

Safety has also been boosted via a standard-fit rear-view camera and active cruise control that gets steering assist, although the latter is only available on HSE model grades and above.

Like the recently updated Jaguar F-PACE, the Velar also benefits from the option of new self-sealing tyres that have sealant within the tyre to patch an air-tight seal over any punctures and allow the driver to continue on his or her journey.

When the updated Velar arrives Down Under, buyers will also be offered the choice of a new Ostuni Pearl White and Lantau bronze paint. And for those who really value individualism, Land Rover has announced it is extending its SV Bespoke Paint service to cover the Velar.

This provides an additional 14 premium finishes, plus a match-to-sample service that allows buyers to replicate the colour of virtually anything they like, from their dog to nail vanish.

The powertrain line-up is unchanged, meaning in Australia we should still get the same 184kW 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, a 294kW 3.0-litre mild-hybrid inline six-cylinder and a single 150kW 2.0-litre mild-hybrid four-cylinder turbo-diesel.

In the UK, a Velar Edition based on the R-Dynamic SE grade also been added, featuring 20-inch alloy rims, a sliding panoramic roof and matrix LED headlights.
