Updated 'Troopie' to debut V8 turbodiesel

Toyota will debut its new V8 turbodiesel powerhouse in its updated 70 Series (pictured) to be unveiled at the Brisbane Motor Show early next month.

The new 70 Series 'Troopie' will actually debut as a cab-chassis utility. It will be the first time the new powerplant has been shown in public worldwide.

According to Toyota's Public Relations Manager, Mike Breen, no technical details regarding the engine will be announced until the vehicle's official launch at the end of March. The Brisbane showing is a “preview” only, Breen said.

The new 70 Series features updated front bodywork to accommodate the wider V8 engine, but according to Breen is unchanged from the A-pillar rearwards.

LandCruiser wagon buyers will not be able to experience the new engine until the new 200 Series flagship all-wheel drive arrives in October 2007. In the interim, Toyota is banking on satisfying demand for diesel wagons via a stockpile of 2006-build cars.

Details of the new engine are limited though Toyota has confirmed two versions will be offered -- the 70 Series will debut the lower output engine.

It is possible that the differentiation (along with higher power and torque outputs) will be the number of turbochargers. CarPoint understands the 200 Series will feature a twin-turbo powerplant, while the 70 is expected to debut in Brisbane sporting a single-blower variant.

No power or torque figures have been announced.

Toyota will also unveil the new V6-engined Tarago peoplemover at Brisbane.
