Upgraded 2024 Mazda BT-50 arrives

No noteworthy price increases for updated BT-50, which scores the Isuzu D-MAX’s Rough Terrain Mode

The updated 2024 Mazda BT-50 ute range has arrived Down Under looking and costing the same as its predecessor, but packing more technology and convenience features than before – plus a new variant.

The new addition in question is a cab-chassis version of the luxurious GT grade, which pairs the utilitarian body style with brown leather upholstery, heated front seats, a black headliner, power adjustable driver’s seat and heated wing mirrors encased in chrome.

All 4x4 variants, meantime, have been blessed with the 2024 Isuzu D-MAX’s new Rough Terrain Mode, a low-speed off-road traction control system that remains active on the front axle when the rear differential is locked.

Other milder upgrades include the accessories and audio system staying on once the vehicle is turned off (XTR and up) and walk-away locking for the base XS and XT grades.

The model year upgrade has also seen the BT-50 close the pricing gap between itself and its Isuzu twin, given D-MAX prices increased by $500-$3000 with the release of the 2024 versions.

However, the situation is muddied somewhat by the fact Mazda hasn’t opted to upgrade the BT’s infotainment system, instrument cluster, safety credentials, USB ports or exterior design.

It was a similar story with the previous-generation BT-50, which remained relatively stagnant in its specification compared to the equivalent Ford Ranger on which it was based, with the latter forging ahead and gaining new powertrains, features and refinements.

That said, Mazda does offer the current BT-50 with a much broader array of genuine accessories, particularly when it comes to the chassis and suspension.

No mechanical changes have been made to either of the BT-50’s four-cylinder turbo-diesel powertrains or the six-speed transmissions they’re paired to, meaning the 1.9L and 3.0L donks continue to output 110kW/350Nm and 140kW/450Nm respectively.
