Upgraded Alpina XD3 priced

Top-shelf twin-turbo diesel model based on BMW X3 cops $5K price rise in return for broad updates

Alpina Australia has revealed full pricing and specifications for the updated 2022 Alpina XD3, with first customer deliveries of the high-performance biturbo diesel mid-size SUV expected late this year.

Priced from $119,900 plus on-road costs, the revised Alpina XD3 is $5000 more expensive than before and now sits $4000 upstream of the incoming facelifted BMW X3 M40i petrol (from $115,900) and $25,000 clear of the related 195kW/620Nm X3 xDrive30d (from $94,900).

Offsetting the price rise, the Alpina XD3 is powered by an upgraded version of the 3.0-litre six-cylinder biturbo diesel that adds a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to boost output, prolong the automatic engine idle-stop time and provide power for certain engine ancillaries.

It’s also said to improve throttle response, with peak power now rated at 261kW from 4000-4200rpm and peak torque at 730Nm from 1750-2750rpm.

Those figures are enough to launch the XD3 from 0-100km/h in 4.9 seconds, while fuel consumption comes in at 6.8L/100km on the official combined cycle.

The XD3 sends power to all four corners via BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system (with a rear-drive bias), which is mated to an eight-speed ZF-sourced torque-converter automatic that Alpina says is “specifically adapted to the XD3’s torque-rich drivetrain”.

A limited-slip differential is also fitted to the rear axle, while Alpina says a new “Performance Control system can subtly brake individual wheels to further maximise grip and traction where required”.

Other highlights include Alpina-specific adaptive sports suspension, retuned variable sport steering system and a new Comfort+ setting among the drive modes.

Stopping power comes from large 395mm front brake discs, clamped by four-pot callipers, along with 370mm rear discs with single floating callipers.

On the outside, the XD3 brings a unique look, with an Alpina-specific kidney grille, front bumper that brings better air flow and a rear diffuser with integrated quad exhaust tips.
