Full Australian pricing and specifications have been announced for the 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, ahead of its official release on December 1 – before Japan and the US.
More than your average midlife facelift, the upgraded Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is significantly longer than the small SUV that was first revealed in early 2017 and was fast-tracked to Australia just a year later following local testing.
The bigger MY21 model, which will be followed next year by a bigger new Outlander and then the second-generation ASX in 2022, also brings substantial design, chassis, technology and equipment upgrades.
The 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross range continues to comprise six variants, this time starting $300 higher at $30,290 plus on-road costs for the entry-level front-wheel drive automatic ES 2WD CVT version.
The five other variants – including the LS 2WD and LS AWD, the new Aspire 2WD grade and the flagship Exceed in both 2WD and AWD guise, the latter topping the line-up at $40,790 plus ORCs – cop similar price hikes.
But while all grades retain their 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine and CVT auto, there are big changes elsewhere including a new-look front-end design with bolder ‘dynamic shield’ grille, sharper headlights and new LED daytime running lights, plus new 18-inch alloy wheels and a revised rear-end design with single window.
The new model remains a five-seater but now measures 140mm longer overall at 4545mm (just 5mm shorter than the Mazda CX-5), increasing rear legroom and boot volume, the latter to 405 litres behind the rear seats, extending to 1149 litres in total.
Inside, there’s a new 8.0-inch colour touch-screen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming as standard. The touch-screen has been moved closer to the driver on a revised dashboard, and touchpad control has been discontinued.
New features for the Exceed flagship include LED headlights, a heated steering wheel and rear seats, and a new 510-Watt Mitsubishi Power Sound System with eight speakers, plus a full-colour head-up display and industry-first embedded offline navigation integrated into the TomTom sat-nav system.
More linear steering and other chassis changes are said to improve both handling and comfort.
“We listened to customers and we are pleased to bring to market an elegant enhancement to the driving experience by bringing comfort, technology and driving dynamics for their next adventure,” said Mitsubishi Motors chief product specialist Minoru Uehara.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross was awarded a five-star ANCAP safety rating in 2017 and comes standard with seven airbags, autonomous emergency braking, anti-lock brakes and traction/stability control.
More advanced safety systems are fitted to selected models including lane departure warning and auto high-beam (LS) and, from Aspire level upwards, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, rear cross traffic alert, lane change assist, blind spot warning and Multi Around Monitor.
Seven exterior paint colours are available, including a new White Diamond hue, plus White and Red Diamond, and extra-cost Lightning Blue pearlescent, Black pearlescent, Sterling Silver metallic and Titanium Grey metallic.
