Upgrades for Japanese Mazda RX-8

Hiroshima adds a bit of extra value to its four-door rotary sports coupe -- at present for Japan only

Mazda in Japan has just introduced a number of updates for its home-market RX-8 range -- updates that should make their way to Australia.

The extra titillation comes in the form of standard rain-sensing wipers, auto-operating headlights, keyless entry and engine start, and water-repellent coating on the front door windows. Japanese-market models are now also available sans sound system to allow customers to fit their own choice of audio.

No definite news yet on whether any of these upgrades will come here, but it could be expected the bulk of them will, as they apply to all models across the range -- although it seems unlikely we would take up the no-audio option.

The revised RX-8 is already on sale in Japan, so its local arrival will likely come down to when the next shipment is ordered for Australia.

The four-door rotary coupe was updated in July 2008 and, although only a niche model for Mazda, is holding its own in sales with 174 sold so far this year compared with 171 during the same period in 2008.
