BMW divested itself of all its other British interests to focus on Mini quality. After a few teething problems, the Mini2 as it is now known to distinguish it from the original, consistently scores as one of the best and most reliable small cars globally.
Big fun and X-factor quotient prompts harder driving hence some earlier maintenance items.
No release since the first Mazda MX-5 has generated such enthusiasm across both genders and so many cultures. With the arrival of the R56 model, the first of the Mini2 series is already being viewed as a classic with a guaranteed future as a timeless used buy.
PRICES
Constant upgrades and end of warranty force the first Mini Cooper examples down to $20,000 or below while the desirable supercharged Cooper S pulls at least $10,000 more.
CHECKPOINTS
Launched locally in March 2002 with Chrysler-based 85kW 1.6-litre four and 15-inch wheels. The Cooper S followed in August 2002 with supercharger, bonnet scoop and a wild 120kW/6-speed manual. August 2003 upgrade added 16-inch wheels, sports seats, map lights and paddles for the CVT transmission. Cooper S gained cruise control and new leather wheel with remote controls.
Aftermarket specialists offer Cooper S kits to liberate an extra 20 per cent power for around $1000 and rear anti-roll bar upgrade for sharper handling.
First five-speed manual had selector cable problems and some internal failures. Early clutches were short lived but should now be fixed under warranty. Tight packaging adds to labour bills like the original. Check clutch wear and action carefully to avoid 15 hour/$1500 plus replacement. CVT auto while effective can feel like a rubber sling shot compared to Mini's rifle bolt precision.
Early run-flat tyres in other markets generated strut tower damage after feeding too much road shock into the structure. Most local cars avoided this with the standard high profile tyres but look for damage if big low profile aftermarket rubber is fitted without a strut tower brace and damper upgrade. Tyres need constant rotation. Front brake rotors and pads work hard.
Short, sharp suspension travel generates addictive go-kart feel but can generate rattles throughout the car. Mini2 is a tar baby as front lower control arm bushes work hard on local roads hence a regular replacement item where front cross member must be dropped. Engine mounts drop their fluid when thrashed. Rear luggage compartment hinges can loosen and activate false dash light warnings.
Electric power steering wiring can fry or pump's cooling fan can die leading to loss of power assistance. Get it fixed immediately to avoid bigger bills.
Early windscreens cracked but should be rectified by now. Minor electric window and regulator woes should also be fixed under warranty
Look for leaked coolant around radiator neck as header tanks start to crack. Early engine seals just starting to harden for minor rocker cover oil leaks.
Although cabin sometimes described as plasticky, general quality is better than some BMW models. Optional early Xenon headlights while sensational can lock owners into expensive globe replacement.
