Used cars often need repairs, says NRMAOne in 10 used cars on sale in NSW dealerships require more than $2000 in repairs, new figures show.
An NRMA Motoring and Services study of 100 second-hand cars being offered for sale at dealerships found at least one fault in every vehicle, at an average repair cost of $522.
Almost 60 per cent had repair costs of $500 or more, 30 per cent $1000 or more and 11 per cent exceeded $2000.
One car needed repairs totalling $5000, said NRMA Motoring and Services head of vehicle inspection, Damon Tudor.
"Faults in used cars are common and NSW motorists could be setting themselves up for a real personal and financial hit if they do not have independent inspections undertaken prior to purchase," Mr Tudor said.
"Some of the faults found in these used vehicles would not be covered by the used car warranty, meaning the buyer could incur unnecessary costs and potential safety risks."
Most used car dealers were honest, but between 15 and 20 per cent tried to discourage independent testing prior to purchase, Mr Tudor said.
"The message is clear -- if you are purchasing a vehicle, no matter from a dealer, private sale, mates or family member, take all the checks required -- including an independent inspection -- or expect problems," he said.
