Used Suzuki Jimny prices skyrocket

Asking prices for cult baby off-roader on used car market almost double what they are brand-new

If you thought Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series prices were outrageous, take a look at this…

At the other end of the ever-popular 4x4 off-roader market, the Suzuki Jimny is selling on the used car market for almost double what it retails for in new car showrooms, where availability is low and demand so strong that waiting times continue to extend for up to a year.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that current used car listings on carsales.com.au show that private Jimny owners and dealerships are taking full advantage of the situation and attempting to cash in, with most examples in the mid-to-high $40,000s and one private listing even at the $50K mark.

Even with a fresh price hike for new models that takes the starting price of the 2021 Suzuki Jimny to $28,490 plus on-road costs, the circa-$50K asking price for low-kilometre 2020 models (or earlier) is still a sight to behold on the carsales listings.

Of the 99 Suzuki Jimny models currently listed on carsales across Australia, you’ll need at least $40,000 to get into many of them.

And if you thought the frenzy only applied to current-series models, think again… there’s a host of previous-generation Suzuki Jimny Sierra models (1998-2018) up for sale, with asking prices for the better ones at around the $30,000 mark.

For background, Suzuki launched the fourth-generation off-roader Down Under in January 2019, priced at $23,990 (five-speed manual) and $25,990 (four-speed automatic) before on-road costs were factored in.

Since then, the Japanese car-maker has increased prices on three separate occasions – adding a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty and capped-price service program along the way – which brings today’s list prices up to $28,490 (manual) and $29,990 (auto) for the single-grade GLX variant.

There have been no major updates to the current Suzuki Jimny since its arrival two years ago.

Back in 2017, the Suzuki Jimny Sierra was priced from $23,990 with an auto transmission.

Today, some low-kilometre examples are asking upwards of $28,000.

Suzuki Australia has confirmed it has secured extra supplies of new Jimny models from Japan and is hoping to reduce the current 12-month waiting time to between six and eight months.
