Used Toyota LandCruiser prices hit $280K

Asking prices for V8-powered 200 Series ’Cruisers still soaring

If you are like us and spend a lot of time looking through the classifieds then you've no doubt noticed a sharp spike in pricing for all used cars, but in particular for Toyota LandCruisers.

The age-old law of supply and demand explains the interaction between the supply of and demand for a product – in this case, the LandCruiser – and the effect of supply has on its list price.

There are many reasons for this, including but not limited to the global shortage of semi-conductors to build new vehicles, forcing many buyers who would traditionally be looking for a brand-new car to settle for a used example due to lack of availability from the manufacturer.

A quick look at the carsales classifieds shows prices of the superseded Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series continue to increase at a rapid rate, thanks in part to high prices and long waiting lists for the new 300 Series.

Indeed the highest price currently being asked for a used 200 Series is $280,000, for a heavily blinged 2021 GXL with just over 5000km under its belt. In fact there are three 200 Series tough-trucks on sale for $230K or more.

But even bog-stock, unmodified 200 Series ’Cruisers are hitting the market with enormous price tags. Take for example this 2021 Toyota LandCruiser Sahara with less than 5000km on the lock for $200,000.

To put things into perspective, that’s a 61 per cent price increase over what the same vehicle cost when it was brand-new.

While no used car has been immune to inflated prices over the past two years, the prices of some have been hiked much more than others. This 2016 LandCruiser Sahara with 56,000km of work behind it is a good example, with an asking price of $185,000.

Why is this? Well, aside for the reasons listed above, the Japanese off-road icon is known for many things, including but not limited to the capability and reliability to go practically anywhere.

Sure, LandCruisers are not exactly cheap to begin with, but in a market as hot as this we have to ask how much higher can they go?

Toyota Australia recently apologised to its customers for the long waiting lists currently affecting not only the new 300 Series but the latest RAV4 Hybrid since its launch.

Some early-bird customers finally received their new LandCruisers as promised earlier this month, but carsales understands new orders won’t be filled until at least the second half of 2022.

It isn't just new LandCruisers that have experienced large jumps in value, but old ones as well – mainly because of their reputation for robust reliability in unstable times.

Extremely low mileage versions have been seen going for luxury car money. A 1992 LandCruiser 80 Series with only 73,133km on the clock is currently listed for $69,990.

The boxier style and reputation that precedes this version also makes the 60 Series a collectable off-roader, with a 1985 model listed for $60,000.

The LandCruiser is an all-terrain master and many know that. In 2014 a pair of 200 Series LandCruisers took the top two positions in the production car category of the Dakar.

The longest driven journey is 741,065km and was achieved by Emil and Liliana Schmid from Switzerland, who travelled across 186 countries in the same Toyota LandCruiser on a journey that started on October 18, 1984 and is still ongoing.

Icons don’t come cheap and in the case of the LandCruiser, they actually get pricier. With that in mind, we wonder why anyone would invest in crypto currency when they can just buy a LandCruiser instead.

2021 Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series range (L-R) VX, GX, GR Sport, GXL, Sahara and Sahara ZX.
