As the Deniliquin Ute Muster grows in popularity with each passing year, the record numbers of utes gathered in the one place is an obvious clincher for the Guiness World Record (GWR) title. But perhaps less apparent is the Muster's other GWR claim to fame, an equally impressive and quintessentially Australian feat: the largest gathering of people wearing blue shearers' singlets.
The unique anthology of well-loved Chesty Bonds in a sea of rustic revelers saw last year's tally crack 2230. But with over 10,000 utes expected to attend this year’s event, organizers are confident the call to arms (or is that the sleeveless / armless) can be broken in a few short weeks.
"We are calling all ute and blue singlet lovers to make the pilgrimage to Deni this year and be part of history," said festival director, John Harvie. "The great thing about this attempt is that people of all ages can take part in it wearing an iconic Australian piece of clothing."
The attempt has been accepted by the Guiness World Records team with official judge, Chris Sheedy, again ready to adjudicate proceedings.
"I can't begin to describe how excited I am to witness, once again, this most Australian of records," said Sheedy. "My work with Guinness World Records takes me to some truly spectacular places, but this annual pilgrimage to the Deniliquin Ute Muster is one of the highlights."
The Guinness World Records attempt will be staged in the RM Williams Bull Ride arena on Saturday 2 October, 2010 at 2pm sharp with the official ute count to take place from 8am on the Saturday morning.
This year's Ute Muster will be held October 1 and 2 in Deniliquin, NSW. Tickets are available at http://www.deniutemuster.com/
