V6 power for RAV4

Toyota's compact SUV now comes with the Kluger's 3.5-litre V6

More power than than any other car in the compact SUV segment -- that's the boast from Toyota, following the introduction of the company's RAV4 V6 models in CV6, SX6 and ZR6 variants.

Fitted with the same 3.5-litre V6 that powers Kluger, Tarago and Aurion, the RAV4 now has some serious grunt to tackle the trials and tribulations of off-roading and open-road driving.

The oversquare design V6, which was introduced in the RAV4 application at AIMS in Sydney (more here), produces 201kW of peak power from 6200rpm and 333Nm of torque at 4700rpm.

With the extra herbs, towing capacity has increased from the four-cylinder models' 400kg to 1900kg, yet fuel consumption is 10.5lt/100km in combined cycle testing, in accordance with ADR81/01.

Toyota has specified just a five-speed automatic transmission to relay the V6 engine's torque to the full-time four-wheel drive system.

Safety equipment for the V6 models includes six airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, VSC (stability program), traction control, Hill-start Assist and Downhill Assist.

Electrically assisted steering, air conditioning, fully adjustable steering column (reach and tilt), rear heater ducting, cruise control, electric windows/mirrors, six-speaker MP3-compatible audio, remote controls (steering wheel-mounted) and rear seat head restraints are fitted as standard to the CV6 entry-level model.

Over the CV6, the SX6 features push-button selectable climate control, six-stack multi-changer CD audio, leather-bound steering wheel, premium seat fabric, leather gear knob, privacy glass, five-spoke alloy wheels, front fog lights, fender flares and roof rails.

For the ZR6, additional features include leather trim, electrically adjustable driver's seat with powered lumbar adjustment, front seat heating, satellite navigation and in-dash four-disc CD audio.

With the introduction of the V6, the RAV4 range now comprises nine variants (six four-cylinder models). The V6 models can be distinguished from the fours by darkened headlight covers and a chrome-finish radiator grille with V6 badge.

Prices for the V6 models are $39,990 for the CV6, $43,990 for the SX6 and $49,990 for the ZR6. Toyota has not amended pricing for the four-cylinder models, which start from $31,990 for the CV manual and top out at $43,990 for the Cruiser L auto.
