V8 diesel for Rangie

Land Rover added a V8 turbodiesel to the Range Rover's armory

Oiler fans have a new engine to drool over. To debut in the 2007 Range Rover Vogue, Land Rover's new turbodiesel V8 is claimed to be one of the world’s most advanced diesels. Displacing 3.6-litres, the 32-valve OHC V8 is rated at 200kW and pumps out a prodigious 640Nm of torque.

That torque 'mountain' is delivered from 2000-2500rpm, says Land Rover, with over 400Nm available from just 1250rpm. To put this in perspective, that’s more torque than the TdV6 engine the eight replaces produced at its peak!

Indeed, though the new V8 is 54 per cent more powerful and delivers 64 per cent more torque than the V6, according to Land Rover the new mill delivers the same fuel economy. Claimed combined average fuel economy of the Euro4 compliant powertrain is 11.3lt/100 km.

Acceleration is improved with the 0-100km/h increment quoted at 9.2sec (down from 13.6). In gear acceleration is significantly improved - Land Rover claims a 40 per cent reduction in the Vogue's 80-110km/h overtaking time. Less relevant Down under is top speed – for the record it's electronically limited at 200km/h -- up from 179.

The TDV8 is matched to the six-speed automatic transmission already used on petrol Range Rover Vogue models. The suspension set-up is similar to that of the Range Rover Vogue Supercharged. Larger Brembo front brakes are standard.

The 2007 Range Rover Vogue also receives cabin updates including new fascia and front seats and the addition of Land Rover's Terrain Response system as standard on all 2007 models. This features an electronically-controlled centre differential. A rear 'e-diff' is optional.

"The TDV8 diesel is a great new engine," said Land Rover MD Phil Popham. "Its balance of performance, refinement and economy is unmatched. We believe it makes the Range Rover an even more desirable vehicle, especially in strong diesel markets, and will appeal to many customers who've never considered a diesel before.”

Two petrol engine options continue unchanged for the Range Rover Vogue - a 291kW supercharged V8 and the normally-aspirated 225kW version.

Pricing for the new Range Rover Vogue TDV8 has not been announced.
