Volvo’s entry into Australia’s V8 Supercars championship has been confirmed at a press conference in Brisbane this morning.
Volvo Polestar Racing is an alliance between local factory-owned distributor Volvo car Australia, Volvo’s global performance and racing partner Polestar and V8 Supercars team Garry Rogers Motorsport.
The team’s two S60 racers will be developed by Polestar and GRM to V8 Supercars’ Car of the Future regulations and will debut at the opening round of the 2014 championship.
As previously reported by motoring.com.au, the S60s will be powered by 5.0-litre versions of Volvo’s 4.4-litre Yamaha-developed V8 engine.
Volvo Car Australia has not disclosed its financial investment in the V8 Supercars campaign but it’s said to be $6 million or more. However, Volvo Car Group globally will support the program, which is regarded as a full factory effort.
Indeed, in an obvious shot at Mercedes-Benz -- which provides no backing for Erebus Motorsport’s E 63 AMG championship campaign -- the press release announcing the program says Volvo is “the first luxury brand to join the V8 Supercars with a factory team”.
The press material made no reference to timeframes except to say GRM, which currently races Holdens, has been signed to a “multi-year contract.”
