VACC calls for fuel theft database

It's a hot topic for service station proprietors and VACC, the body representing them in Victoria. That's why, in a press release issued overnight, the VACC has cited the need for a fuel theft database, to log incidents (and presumably prosecutions also).
Although the general public complains bitterly about volatile fuel prices, the profit in fuel at the retail end of the supply chain is quite low, which is why so many service stations nowadays sell much more profitable chocolate bar lines as well. One unpaid tank of fuel can put a significant dint in a day's profit for a fuel retailer.
VACC is taking a tough line with the incumbent government and the opposition in Victoria, with either a chance to retain/win government after the upcoming state election at the end of November. With the next government holding the reins through to 2018 – and into a post-manufacturing era – the VACC is seeking support for its 5500 constituent members, many of whom are heavily reliant on a thriving automotive industry.
"With car manufacturing due to cease in the State at the end of 2017, now is the time for political parties to adjust their sights and focus on issues pertinent to the retail, service and repair sector of the automotive industry," David Purchase, VACC Executive Director, was quoted saying in the press release.
Government needs to engage more with automotive retail, service and repair sectors, the VACC argues. In Victoria the combined sectors employ 80,000, with a further 240,000 staff employed throughout the rest of the nation. Maintaining low unemployment figures is contingent on supporting and sustaining small business, VACC contends.
"The sector faces significant challenges and addressing VACC's pre-election issues will ensure thousands of small businesses continue to operate and prosper. VACC will continue to promote these matters in the run up to the State Election and when the next Victorian Government is known, they will be discussed in detail."
In its pre-election submission, the VACC demanded:
- Increased funding for the Victorian Small Business Commissioner
- Victoria Police develop a fuel theft offenders database
- Vic Roads retain current roadworthy certificate on transfer scheme
- Government protect consumers' rights to know whether genuine or non-genuine parts have been used in repairs
- Government also protect consumers' rights to know whether they have a choice of accident repairer
- Vic Roads introduce a flexible vehicle registration and TAC payment scheme
- Government reinstate employer incentives funding for Certificate II level automotive qualifications
- Government review the funding model for Registered Training Organisations
- Government consult with the automotive industry when planning automotive training
- Government fund and support in full industry-based apprenticeship mentoring
- Government back an LPG vehicle production proposal for Geelong which would create 500 new jobs
- Government review and amend all taxes to enable thousands more Victorians to be employed
- Government phase out payroll tax
