Slowly rising in popularity once more in unison with the growing tiny house movement, the van life goes beyond these clichés to become a genuinely liveable alternative to a bricks-and-mortar house – and can even be a little bit stylish.
Many folks, after ‘vanning it up’ on sun-drenched road trips, have been inspired by what can be done within the confines of the humble van. Then there are the van-changers: the people who simply seek to live differently from everyone else.
Cyrus Sutton, an American filmmaker, did the travelling thing. He got his first taste of the van life on a surf trip and never looked back, mastering the art of #vanlife and making a film all about converting his beloved Sprinter van into a home-on-wheels that has the grainy aesthetic of a rustic log cabin.
Also seeking an offbeat life in a van: Instagram travellers, who have combined the van lifestyle with their creative careers – including a published journal The Rolling Home – thanks to an 80,000-mile journey in a self-built home: a 1996 VW transporter.
Van life is rife: head along to projectvanlife on Instagram for daily van inspiration, ideas and photography, and start dreaming about what can be done in and on four wheels.
