VFACTS for November: Million milestone reached
With still a month to go the new car market has exceeded a million units, despite a downturn in NovemberNew-car sales stumbled during the month of November, according to figures released today by industry statistician VFACTS. But that didn't stop the market topping a million units sold for the year so far.
The market remains nearly 23,000 sales ahead of last year's number, based on year-to-date figures, but sales last month fell by 1423 units – 1.4 per cent less than November 2012. All classes other than SUVs lost momentum during the month, but the SUVs were up 2600 units.
In the SUV class, only the upper large segment sold fewer vehicles than for the same month last year. Every single model in that segment sold below the figure for November 2012, whether it was Patrol and LandCruiser below $100,000 or Range Rover, Lexus LX, Benz G-Class and GL above $100,000.
In every other SUV segment, however, there was much rejoicing. All those segments experienced sales growth for the month, with the exception of large SUVs above $70,000. Most apparent was the gain by small SUVs. About half the growth for the month came from the newly arrived Holden Trax and Nissan Juke.
Surprisingly, most passenger vehicle segments showed sales growth during the month, with light, medium and upper large cars the only exceptions. Even the locally-built Falcon and Commodore picked up sales for the month, year on year.
Every segment of light commercial vehicle slumped during November.
Total sales for the month amounted to 96,924. Of those 49,089 were passenger cars, 28,889 were SUVs and 16,315 were light commercial vehicles. In year to date figures, the market has posted 1,039,471 – not quite 23,000 more vehicles sold than for the same period last year.
Top selling brands for the year to date are: Toyota (195,020), Holden (102,909), Mazda (94,618), Hyundai (89,259), Ford (80,364), Nissan (70,228), Mitsubishi (64,822), Volkswagen (50,217), Honda (36,748) and Subaru (36,540). Of the companies in the top ten, Mazda, Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen and Honda have increased sales for the year to date.
The 10 best selling cars during the month of November were: Toyota Corolla (3894), Mazda3 (3666), Toyota Hilux (3368), Hyundai i30 (3157), Holden Commodore (3097), Toyota Camry (2375), Volkswagen Golf (2069), Ford Ranger (2014), Holden Cruze (1846) and Mitsubishi Triton (1703).
