The 2025 Zeekr 7X was the second best-selling premium mid-size SUV of any variety last month with 682 examples landing on local driveways; 75 more than the Kia Tasman which was earmarked to become the Korean giant’s leading sales light.
We always knew the Zeekr 7X was going to be a popular player in its segment, but few could’ve predicted it’d become the second best-selling premium mid-size SUV in the country during its first full month on sale, let alone outsell one of the most eagerly awaited models in recent years: the Kia Tasman.
The 7X has launched to huge demand and rave reviews, while the Tasman has so far fallen well short of its circa-1700 monthly sales target – despite earning mostly positive feedback.
Although, there are more variants on the way, Kia would have been hoping to shift more than 1000 units per month early on, especially after six months on the market.
The Zeekr’s secret sauce? It’s essentially the car equivalent of a succulent Chinese meal, pairing outstanding value with a loaded equipment list, class-leading charging speeds, an impressive cruising range, and a genuinely excellent driving experience.
The Tasman on the other hand could be likened to a Korean barbeque; delicious in so many ways but perhaps a bit too spicey for most regarding its polarising exterior design.
It is undeniably a good ute, yet it currently poses no major threat to the Mazda BT-50, Mitsubishi Triton or even the GWM Cannon on the sales charts – none of which are close to cracking the top 10 best-sellers.
Although to be fair, neither is the Zeekr…

How Kia plans to reverse the Tasman’s underwhelming sales trend remains unclear.
So far, its best month this year was September, with 806 sales across the 4x4 and 4x2 versions – Mitsubishi sold 1733 Tritons, Mazda 1088 BT-50s, and GWM 974 Cannons that same month.
Zeekr will in the meantime continue shooting for the stars as it targets the Tesla Model Y; the only model it’s content with playing second fiddle to in a sales context… for now.
