The Toyota RAV4 topped the monthly sales charts in November, besting both the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux by more than 1700 and 2900 units respectively as hybrid and plug-in hybrid sales continue to surge.
This is the first time since January the RAV4 has usurped both the Ford Ranger and the Toyota HiLux to take top spot, with 6390 examples rolling into Aussie driveways last month compared to 4673 Rangers and 3418 HiLuxs.
Positions four-through-10 were occupied by the surging Chery Tiggo 4 (2287) small SUV, Tesla Model Y (2269), Isuzu D-MAX (2119), Ford Everest (2097), Hyundai Kona (2008), Mitsubishi Outlander (2006) and Hyundai Tucson (1942) in that order.
The RAV4’s success is reflective of the evolving tastes of consumers who are increasingly seeking out either hybrid or plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles as the technology becomes ever more affordable, effective and abundant.

Hybrid sales were up almost 34 per cent compared to November 2024 while PHEV sales were up more than 83 per cent. However, it’s the latter’s year-to-date performance that’s continuing to raise eyebrows: up 130.6 per cent on the first 11 months of 2024 (47,565 vs 20,631).
But for all their increasing popularity, neither hybrids nor PHEVs are remotely close to challenging petrol (440,765 YTD) or diesel (336,396 YTD) as Australia’s favourite fuel type… yet.

That said, PHEVs are still the least popular fuel type (discounting hydrogen), albeit by a shrinking margin to EVs.
As if there was any other way, Toyota retained its manufacturer’s crown last month; shifting 19,787 units compared to Ford’s comparatively paltry-looking 7407, Mazda’s 6979, Hyundai’s 6707 and Kia’s 6510.
A full breakdown of the best-selling makes and models can be found at the bottom of this report.

As for the overall market, 99,906 new vehicles were registered last month (including Tesla and Polestar who don’t submit their sales figures to the FCAI’s VFacts report) to take the year’s rolling tally to 1,139,524 units (+0.17%)
It’s practically a given the market will eclipse 1.2 million units by the end of the year, but by how much by and whether there’s a new sales record on the cards remains to be seen.
