The Victorian state government has delivered on its commitment to axe fees for learner and probationary drivers’ licenses as well as online testing fees, waiving all of those charges as of yesterday (August 15).
Premier Dan Andrews confirmed the move via his social media channels by posting a picture of his old probationary licence from 1996.
“Those glasses were trendy back then, I swear,” the post reads.
“Things change I guess. Just like getting your L’s and P’s – starting today they’re free.”
The notion of free testing, leaner permits and probationary licences was first announced on June 30 as part of the state government’s makeover of VicRoads, which also includes the return of a reward-based discount for drivers with no traffic offences on their record in the three years prior to their license renewal.
Learner drivers will save up to $51.40 in licencing and testing fees, while probationary drivers will save up to $133.30.
Drivers with a clean three-year record, meanwhile, will save 25 per cent off their next licence renewal.
State treasurer Tim Pallas described the move as “a win for all Victorians”.
“It means a better experience for drivers and owners of cars, motorbikes, trucks and boats, and continued investment in VicRoads for future generations,” he said when the transition was announced.
Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll added that getting one’s L and P plates was “one of life’s most significant milestones”.
