It’s not the most obscene amount of money a buyer has forked out for a rare number plate in Australia – this $1.1m two-digit plate takes the cake – but it’s said to be priciest six-digit plate sold at auction Down Under.
Yep, someone paid $363,000 for a piece of plastic (enamel) on the weekend.
Still, that’s pocket money compared to the $22.5 million someone spent on a ‘P7’ plate at a Dubai auction last year, making it the world’s most expensive number plate.
Back in Australia and the six ascending figures of the ‘123-456’ number plate sold at Donington Auctions’ ‘Collector Car and Number Plate’ event over the weekend for more than a third of a million bucks, beating the previous six-figure plate auction record set earlier in the year when the same company sold the very lucky ‘888-888’ for $230K.
Better yet, the ‘123-456’ was estimated to sell for $250,000-280,000, however, according to Donington Auctions, the plate in question was the subject of a ‘bidding war’ with two bidders in heated competition during the online auction.
It wasn’t the only plate to sell at auction this weekend, with an original 1956 Melbourne Olympic plate up for grabs, said to have been fitted to an official’s vehicle and used some 68 years ago by the current (elderly) owner.
That plate was estimated to go for around $800, instead fetching a healthy $2700.
Also part of the auction were a handful of vintage cars, including a 1924 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost which sold for $195,000 and a Jaguar XK150 for $62,000.
