A panel of Victorian residents has recommended eradicating the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 as a means of supporting the state’s transition to a zero-emissions vehicle fleet.In the latest research compiled by independent advisory body Infrastructure Victoria, a community panel of 211 residents delivered 21 recommendations for the Victorian government to adopt in the coming years.Other measures include advocating electric vehicles on government fleets in a bid to reduce prices on the used car market.Infrastructure Victoria chief executive Michel Masson said it was critical that governments acted immediately, given an uptick in individual car use as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.“Victoria will not reach its emissions reduction targets unless more people shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles, but this transition needs to be planned, fair and equitable,” Masson said.
