Audi has announced it is launching an all-new aid that processes real-time information to inform the driver how long a red light changes to green.
The new system, called Traffic Technology Services (TTS) will launch first in the USA at the end of 2016.
Available on the Audi Q7, A4 and A4 Allroad - provided those vehicles are fitted with the Audi Connect system - the new tech uses the in-car 4G internet to receive real-time information from traffic light control centres.
Currently, Audi’s TTS will only work in "selected cities”, hinting that some cities might not have infrastructure that supports the new traffic light communication device.
The German car maker hopes drivers will use the traffic light timing information to help drive more efficiently by slowly coasting to the lights, for example, instead of stopping sharply.
Audi also hopes cities will use the data communicated back to them from the vehicles fitted with TTS to help understand where traffic jams are occurring and amend traffic light sequences accordingly.
It's not known whether Audi Australia plans to introduce the same technology here or, indeed, our road infrastructure will work with TTS if it does.
In the UK and some European markets Audi has confirmed that it will introduce the new tech only once the infrastructure is in place.
