VIDEO: Final tease of next-gen Mercedes A-Class ahead of reveal

Mercedes-Benz has posted the final teases of its all-new fourth-generation A-Class ahead of its full reveal late tonight (our time) at a special VIP event in Amsterdam.

The two videos posted on the German car-maker's social media outlets overnight go further than ever to give us a glimpse of its BMW 1 Series rival but just fall short of actually unveiling the full car.

Showing snippets of its interior and a driver using its advance Siri-style voice control system, our best look at how the next A-Class is shaping up is this short film featuring head of Daimler design, Gordon Wagener.

Shown in side profile for the first time, the latest instalment of Merc's smallest model is claimed to be both sportier and more spacious than the current model. We already know from previous teases that the small hatch draws inspiration from the latest CLS that was launched at the LA motor show last November.

It's also confirmed range-topping versions will come with twin-10.3-inch HD screens to display the infotainment system and customisable instrument panel.

Based on the German car-maker's modular MFA platform, the latest A-Class will also spin-off a sedan version for the first time, as well as a new CLA four-door coupe and Shooting Brake wagon.

Despite being longer, wider and taller than the outgoing model, the next A-Class will be significantly lighter thanks to its underpinnings that use a higher mix of ultra-high-strength steel and aluminium.

Likely to come with advanced semi-autonomous driving aids so far only seen on larger, pricier Benz models like the E-Class and S-Class, the little A-Class will also debut a nifty new car-to-car communications function that's designed to share live traffic information with other road users.

Under the bonnet, turbocharged petrol engines will dominate, while diesels will be available on the higher-grade models.

In the future the A-Class should become available with an electric powertrain, as the B-Class was, but until that arrives the small hatch is likely to benefit from the car-maker's new 48-volt mild-hybrid technology.

The fourth-gen A-Class will bring not one but two AMG variants with the high-performance division developing both a new 300kW-plus A 45 hot hatch and a new less powerful A 35 warn hatch.

On-sale dates have yet to be confirmed but the A-Class hatch is expected to arrive in Australian dealerships before the end of this year, with the new A-Class sedan and CLA variants following in 2019.
